Application and Acceptance

What are the qualifications required to attend – specifically for NPs? National Certification? BSN? MSN?

‘Provider’ is defined as nurse practitioner, physician assistant, certified nurse midwife, DO or MD. The applicant will be assessed by application and interviewed to have the potential to act in the role of clinical preceptor in Title X family planning service projects. Family planning preceptors are identified practitioners experienced in family planning care who provide individualized transitional role support and learning opportunities for less experienced practitioners and practitioners who are new to the Title X family planning setting. The role of the clinical preceptor is to provide education, mentoring and skills assessment of family planning clinical providers. <back>

What if I do not have experience in all of the skills listed on page 5 of the application? Will this keep me from being accepted into the program? Will you provide any training in my ‘deficient’ skills areas?

We do not expect every applicant to have ‘ideal’ skills in every area. This is more of an inventory for us as we plan the individual trainings. The CTCFP will offer preceptor refresher trainings which may include skill-based trainings as the need for such trainings becomes apparent. <back>

What determines which applicants are accepted into the program? What are the priorities for acceptance?

Priorities include experience in Title X family planning settings, currently employed by a Title X agency, opportunities and commitment to precept and the approval and support of the applicant’s agency. <back>

Do I get to choose when and where I attend the program if I am accepted?

Yes - we have a calendar of upcoming trainings and you may specify which one you want to attend. The Training Operations Coordinator may call you if a spot opens up in an upcoming training session to see if you are interested in attending one closer to where you live or work or a date that is sooner than when you had wanted to go. <back>

Training Program

What does the curriculum cover? Will there be an evaluation of my clinical skills? Is there content to address my skill 'deficiencies'

The curriculum covers communication, precepting, adult learning, dealing with conflict, Title X system and guidelines and their use in clinical practice as well as legal and ethical issues, and updates on cross cutting evidence-based family planning issues. Self-assessment is the cornerstone of our program. We do not do a formal evaluation of your clinical skills; however, the clinical practicum that occurs allows participants to demonstrate their skills in selected areas and to receive updates or refreshers in areas where they feel weak or less experienced. <back>

Is there additional funding available to cover my travel, lodging and meal expenses? How do I apply?

The CTCFP provides the tuition for the 2 ½ days of training to Title X employees and also provides a travel stipend of $200 to each attendee. In addition, participants will receive 18 contact hours of nursing continuing education at no charge

Preceptors are encouraged to speak with their Title X Regional Training Center and Regional Program Consultant for assistance with travel expenses, if necessary.

Precepting at my Home Site

Will I be supplied with resources to help me teach/evaluate clinical skills of my preceptees?

Yes. Each trained preceptor will receive a preceptor tool kit after they complete the training. Preceptors will additionally have access to supplemental information on www.CTCFP.org. <back>

If I am available to serve as a preceptor for other Title X agencies in my state, how will other agencies know I am available? Is there a plan for a centralized listing of prepared and available preceptors?

The CTCFP, Regional Program Consultants, and Regional Training Centers will all have information about trained preceptors. The CTCFP maintains a database containing all trained preceptors' names and contact information. Agencies are invited to contact the CTCFP to receive the names of preceptors in their region. <back>

Will I be obligated to precept persons from outside of my employing agency?

This is not determined by the CTCFP. There is no formal obligation to do this; however, you may receive requests from other agencies. It is up to you and your sponsoring agency and Title X Grantee to decide if you will do that. <back>

Does the precepting take place at my clinic or at the preceptee's?

The location of the preceptorship is to be negotiated between the preceptor and preceptee's agencies. <back>

Who will cover my expenses if I precept for other agencies at my agency?

The CTCFP will provide the preceptor's agency with $250 per day (7.5 hour day) for precepting, regardless of where the precepting occurs. This facility fee is intended to offset administrative costs associated with precepting.

CTCFP trained preceptors will have the skills and the materials necessary to assess the learning needs of the preceptee. The preceptor and preceptee will determine the number of days necessary for the preceptorship, depending on the learning needs of the preceptee.

The CTCFP estimates that most preceptorships will require 2 to 3 days, depending on the experience of the preceptee. If the preceptorship is expected to run more than 3 days, prior approval by the CTCFP is required. All "other agency" reimbursement issues are to be negotiated between the preceptor and preceptee's agencies. Who will cover my expenses if I precept for other agencies at their agency?

The preceptor's agency will receive a $250 per day (7.5 hour day) facility fee for each day that the preceptor precepts, regardless of where the precepting occurs, to offset expenses associated with having the preceptor out of the clinic. All "other agency" reimbursement issues are to be negotiated between the preceptor and preceptee's agencies. <back>

How many days of precepting are available/reimbursable for a given preceptee as part of the CTCFP preceptor program?

The CTCFP estimates that most preceptorships will require 2 to 3 days depending on the experience of the preceptee. Preceptorships which require more than 3 days are to be approved by the CTCFP prior to the preceptorship. <back>

How does the reimbursement system from CTCFP work? Who is reimbursed?

The CTCFP will reimburse the Title X agency that employs the preceptor. Each preceptor will be given the appropriate forms to complete and give to the CTCFP in order to be reimbursed for each individual preceptorship experience. <back>

Follow-up Training

Is it required that I be able to access/participate in on-line training?

Follow-up or refresher training will occur on-line. The refresher training is recommended, but is optional. Most of the 'Trainer' training course will be offered on-line also. <back>

Is there funding to cover my costs to attend any other onsite updates or conferences?

Not at this time. <back>

Other

Are all Title X grantees required to participate in the program at some level?

This is a question for your individual Regional Program Consultant. The CTCFP has an expectation that all grantees will want to participate. The CTCFP provides training for clinical family planning preceptors who ensure that direct care providers in Title X settings apply the most current knowledge and skills for effective delivery of high quality family planning services. Preceptors that attend the CTCFP preceptor training will be able to better provide their Title X-funded agencies with effective, high quality, evidence-based family planning clinical services, as well as serving as resource people for less experienced practitioners. <back>

What are the benefits to the employing agency of a preceptor?

Preceptors report increased job satisfaction, a sense of 'giving back' to their profession and a decreased sense of professional isolation. There is the potential for enhanced quality of care in the agency related to periodic updates of the scientific literature, access to the network of trained preceptors and access to faculty. Recruitment of providers to work in Title X settings may also be bolstered by having a formalized process and a trained preceptor who can offer transitional role support to less experienced providers. The agency will benefit by having the 'in-house' ability to precept new or less experienced employees and a $250 per day (7.5 hour day) facility fee for the preceptor's time for up to 3 days. <back>

Are there any obligations on the part of an agency for sending a clinician through this program?

The preceptor application outlines this in detail. The application may be accessed on the CTCFP website. <back>

What other training opportunities are available through the CTCFP?

The Title X National Clinical Conference specifically targeting Title X clinicians will occur in 2008 and 2010. Dates for the 2008 event are August 3-5. Location is Denver, Colorado. More information about the conference can be obtained on the CTCFP website. <back>

Preceptor Trainer

Are there additional qualifications for preceptors who are interested in being a 'preceptor trainer'?

All trainers should first complete the CTCFP preceptor training and have experienced precepting after the course. It would be ideal for CTCFP trainers to have previous training or teaching experience. <back>

How does the CTCFP preceptor trainer program work?

In order to become a trainer, preceptor training graduates will need to participate in an on-line training. Each trainer will then train at least one time with an experienced CTCFP trainer. Trainers can choose to train locally and/or nationally. <back>

Do you supply me with the materials I will need to do the training?

The CTCFP will provide all the materials necessary for the training. <back>

What equipment will I need to do the training and where do I get it?

The CTCFP will provide or make arrangements for all the equipment necessary for the training. <back>

Is there any reimbursement available for my time/travel/equipment or room rental?

The CTCFP will reimburse trainers at the rate of $500 to $750 per training day, depending on the content and the number of hours of training. <back>

Will the preceptors I train receive continuing education credit from you?

The preceptors in all CTCFP preceptor trainings will receive nursing continuing education credits. The preceptor training currently offers nursing Continuing Education credits from the Missouri Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

In the future, CTCFP will provide Continuing Medical Education credits for Nurse Midwives, Physician Assistants, Doctors of Medicine, and Doctors of Osteopathy.
<back>

Will the preceptors I train also be provided the ongoing updates and conferences like the preceptors that you train? Will they also be eligible for the $250.00 per day?

The preceptors in all CTCFP preceptor trainings will be kept on a mailing list for CTCFP events. All preceptors that go through the CTCFP training will be able to have their agency reimbursed for $250 per day (7.5 hour day) of each preceptorship. <back>
