LARC Link

What is the LARC Link

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) is a well-established umbrella term used by sexual and reproductive health providers and experts. LARC, as a term, encompasses all FDA-approved birth control methods that provide long-term pregnancy prevention options, are reversible (unlike sterilization or permanent contraception), and are proven to be highly effective.

The LARC Link has been created by the CTC-SRH team to provide a comprehensive set of  external LARC resources, which means that have been developed by other organizations. It serves as an online library to enhance access to sexual and reproductive healthcare training and resources. In contrast, our LARC Overview highlights services provided by the CTC-SRH.

The resources and trainings curated for the LARC Link were provided to the CTC-SRH by independent organizations without any monetary or service exchanges. As a grantee of the Office of Population Affairs, we do not promote any contraceptive method, organization, or pharmaceutical company.

Organon (makers of Nexplanon®)

The FDA requires all who insert or remove the implantable contraceptive to be educated and trained on the product. Once completing an Organon Clinical Training program, a certificate is sent to the provider with a copy to the Specialty distributors.

Training can be provided through two primary routes:

Organon National Service Center

A clinician can call 1-844-674-3200 and request training. Their information will be collected and routed to the appropriate representative for fulfillment whether it’s training, receiving resources, or requesting a Follow-On Review (FOR). A FOR allows for the representative to practice FDA approved techniques on the insertion/removal process as outlined in the package insert with the provider 1:1 using demo arms and placebos.

OrganonConnect.com

A provider can go directly to the Organon website and request training: Insertion and Removal for NEXPLANON® (etonogestrel implant) 68 mg (organonconnect.com). Other information such as procurement, dosing, and safety information is also available on the website.

These recommendations for health care providers were updated by CDC after review of the scientific evidence and consultation with national experts who met in Atlanta, Georgia, during August 26–28, 2015.

The 2016 U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR) addresses a select group of common, yet sometimes controversial or complex, issues regarding initiation and use of specific contraceptive methods.
